Calendar of the Soul

Verses by Rudolf Steiner
English Translations by Tom Mellett

Twentieth Week / Thirty Third Week

Here is the next pair of Calendar of the Soul verses for this week (#20) and its polar opposite (#33). Note how the verses have diverged from the lemniscate's crossing point at Easter, (which is Verse #1 with Polar verse #52). We have passed St. John's Tide (#12), which occurs right after the Summer Solstice and marks the top of the lemniscate. (Christmas marks the bottom). We are now moving toward the crossing point which will occur at Michaelmas (#26) while the polar verse (#33), is now fast approaching Michaelmas "from the future."

For the Easter 2000 to Holy Saturday 2001 cycle:
This week's verse (#20) has dates of: August 18 - 24
The polar verse (#33) corresponds to the week: November 19 - 25

[Note: The dates with the verses are the original dates given by Steiner.]

T.    20. Woche    (18. - 24. August)
So fuehl' ich erst mein Sein,
Das fern vom Welten-Dasein
In sich, sich selbst erloeschen
Und bauend nur auf eig'nem Grunde
In sich, sich selbst ertoeten muesste.

T.    20th week:    (August 18 - 24)
I finally feel my being
far removed from cosmic life.
And by itself, my being must decay---

and building only upon
its own foundation
deep within itself---
must always bring upon itself---

G'.    33. Woche    (17. - 23. November)
So fuehl' ich erst die Welt,
Die ausser meiner Seele Miterleben
An sich nur frostig leeres Leben

Und ohne Macht sich offenbarend,
In Seelen sich von neuem schaffend,
In sich den Tod nur finden koennte.

G'.    33rd week:    (November 17 - 23)
With only my soul to experience it,
I finally feel the world---
but by itself, its life is:
frozen, empty, powerless.

The world reveals itself in our souls.
It re-creates itself---
yet all it can find within itself is---
